Letter from the Board President__________________________________ Jim Roffey
Hello to all members of the Lakeridge Swim Club and welcome to the 2009 season. I hope you all are as excited as we are to put those (extra) snowy days of winter in the past and get ready for warm weather and fun at LSC!
On a somber note, we are all keenly aware of the challenges that are upon us in these uncertain times; still, the costs associated with maintaining and operating the pool are ever increasing. Through much discussion, the board decided that, in lieu of increasing membership dues this season, we would increase the annual maintenance fee from $50 to $100. We are hoping to harness the many talents of our members to help offset some of the maintenance costs. We have added an additional work day for a total of five and we hope to tackle some projects and help get the pool ready for opening. Please see the information outlined below for specific work party details.
The board also decided that there would be no individual memberships offered; as we determined it to be not fiscally responsible to accommodate the needs of a few at the potential expense to the general membership. In addition to that, we made a change to article IX, section 2 of the bylaws regarding the full-summer use guest fee. Instead of having the full-summer use guest fee set in the bylaws, it will be reviewed annually and be set by the Board.
As the newly elected president of the board of trustees of LSC, I am honored to serve the membership and will do all I can to fulfill the duties of my position. Feel free to send me an email with any of your comments and concerns, my address is jimroffey@yahoo.com. See you all at the pool !!
Greetings from the General Manager_____________________________ Sue Bucher
As I start my third year as manager of the pool I find that I like my job here more and more. When I hear how clean and neat the grounds are or that little (Billy or Susie or ___, fill in the blank) has learned to swim I feel so proud of how well all the guards and swim instructors are doing. When I get suggestions on ways to possibly do something better or easier, I’m really pleased, because that means you feel comfortable talking to me and you know I’ll take the time to listen. So, please let me know the good, the bad, the ugly (well, I hope not) and know that the more I hear from you, the more the pool will fit what you all want and need.
Work Parties We’ll need your help during the next couple months to get the pool ready to open. There’s a lot of work to be done at the work parties coming up. We have one Sunday (half-day) and four Saturday (all-day) work parties scheduled this spring: April 18, April 25, April 26, May 2 and May 9. Check-in will begin at ( on the 26th) and we will be working most days until . Please plan to work four hours to waive $50 of your maintenance fee or eight hours to make all $100 of it go away. There will be no partial credit for hours worked. After the initial 8 hours, each additional 4 hours worked will earn you 10 guest passes.
To help keep our costs down we are looking for members who are professional and/or skilled in Carpentry, Painting, Landscaping, Plumbing, Mechanical and Tiling. If you have any of these skills, please let us know in advance or when you check-in for the work parties.
Check-in Procedures You’ll be checking in on the computer again this year, and we’ll be asking for everyone to have their photo taken the first time they visit the pool this season. We will retake any pictures at your request, but please, no excuses. We really won’t be evaluating what your hair looked like or that you weren’t wearing any makeup or that your sunglasses clashed with your t-shirt. Each time you check in: enter your membership number to be added to that day’s entry record and sign-in any guests you may be bringing.
Adult Swim We plan to have adult early-morning lap swims start when we switch over to summer hours on June 23rd. They will be offered Tuesday and Thursday mornings from .
Renewing Member Information / Dues Payment
To receive ten free guest passes, postmark payment by Friday, April 24
To make payment on time, Friday, May 8
To keep membership from being repossessed, Friday, May 15
Membership dues need to be postmarked by the above dates. After May 15, payment is considered “past due”. There is a 15-day grace period for dues payment. If payment is not received by May 15, the membership is subject to repossession by the club. If this situation occurs the member will be notified that payment has not been made, and that the Board will meet in not less than ten days at which time the membership will be repossessed. The notification that a membership is subject to repossession will be mailed to the last known address of the member.
If you will not be renewing your membership, please contact us via email at LakeridgeSwimClub@yahoo.com or send a letter to Lakeridge Swim Club, Attn: Not Renewing,
P.O. Box 78647, Seattle, WA 98178We are currently accepting applications to our wait list. We will attempt to help match up ‘outgoing’ members with those wishing to join on a first-come, first-served basis, but we cannot be sure that the club will be able to help each family wishing to sell their membership. Members are still free to sell their memberships on their own, and all membership transactions must be completed by May 15. Also, all transactions must go through the LSC office or via email at LakeridgeSwimClub@yahoo.com
to become official, and all are subject to a $50 transfer fee.
Guest Policy
Guest fees for this season will remain at $5.00. Please register your guests at the office and pay the staff person on duty or use a guest pass. Our check-in policy is enforced to insure the safety, security and enjoyment of our members. All non-member guests must be accompanied by their host member to be admitted to the pool, and members must stay for the duration of the guest’s visit. Please remember that you are held responsible for your guest’s behavior, so make sure that they are aware of, and follow, the pool rules.
Guest Wristband Policy Each guest checking-in to the pool will be issued a wristband, which they must wear while in attendance. A “Swimmers” wristband signifies usage of all parts of the pool. A “Non-swimmers” wristband signals guards and staff that this person must stay where they can touch. After voluntary completion of a swimming test (see page 1 of the Pool Rules at the end of this newsletter), non-swimmers may be issued a “swimmer” wristband for the remainder of their visit.
If you are bringing child guests, and the parent is not in attendance, plan to have them wear a non-swimmer wristband until completing a swim test. Please be sure to have the guest child’s parent’s contact phone number with you in case of emergency.

Hello Swimmers,
It is time for another great swim season! We had a record turnout last season and our first winning record in years. We have predicted our team to expand again this season. With the increase in swimmers each season we have the depth necessary to continue to be a strong team in the Southern Division. It is also important that you veteran swimmers continue to swim to keep our older age groups strong as well. Everyone, young and old, new and returning, contributes to the team so we are excited to see all swimmers this upcoming season! If you are new and thinking about joining this year, come out to the “Meet the Coaches” event. You will meet people that can answer questions and will help relieve you of any worries you may have. Our team fosters a fun and recreational atmosphere and will also cater to the level of competition you desire.
The practice schedule was changed a bit last season because of our size. This spring we will return to having practice for everyone Monday through Friday. Please come to these practices if you are able to, this is a great time for conditioning before the season, as well as, reuniting with teammates and meeting new swimmers. If you are unable to begin swimming right away, please communicate to us this spring that you will be returning for the summer. During the summer we will continue overlapping practices, using the dive tank for warm-up, flip-turn practice, and other conditioning exercises. The older age groups will also have dry-land incorporated into the week. For the first week of summer practices we will be doing something new. We will have events after practice such as a swim clinic and team breakfast. We will continue on with our other swim team events throughout the season: the mock meet, swim-a-thon, spirit activities, and others. It is going to be a fun season, hope you are looking forward to it as much as I am…..See you in May!

Wow – what a terrific season we had last year! We are excited for the 2009 season to begin and to see all of our summer friends again. This season will certainly be a fun one with lots of home meets. For those of you that are new to Lakeridge or new to the swim team – be prepared to dive in and experience a terrific community of coaches, swimmers and families! Keep an eye out for registration forms – they will be available to download off of our website at www.SwimLSC.org under Swim Team. We encourage everyone to do this, if they can – that way you can fill out, print and hand in the forms to the swim team and save the rest on your computer for information when needed in the future. The handbook will also be available on the website under Swim Team.
Fun in the sun for the whole family! Swim Team is a great opportunity for your child to have great fun, make good friends, learn to cooperate, work as a team member, and get plenty of exercise. If your family feels that you don't know many other member families, there is no better way to feel like you know 'just about everyone' at the pool.
Family Involvement! This is a wonderful family activity - though the children do the hard work of swimming, the parents make the meets happen by volunteering as timers, selling concessions, etc. - even young siblings have fun at meets. Envision yourself at the very edge of excitement of swim meets with a timer in your hand! Or, feel the comfort of handing a hungry swimmer a bowl of warm fragrant noodles and a candy bar. Volunteering on the swim team feeds the soul and motivates the swimmers. We have all sorts of opportunities and need each family to commit to volunteer several times during the swim team season. Be on the look out to thank Kelli Williams and Cheryl Carter who are handling concessions (again!), Karen Fuller who is coordinating timers (again!) and Barbara Staley who is helping out with registration and judging. Al Nance has offered to be a starter yet again – thank you so very much!!!!
Swimming is a great sport! We include this every year in our newsletter because it so fascinating…..Swimmers and Cross Country Runners have the highest GPAs of any school athletes. Our graduating seniors go onto to college and great opportunities. Swimming helped them learn to work hard toward goals, to strive for personal achievement, and to persevere. As one parent put it, "I think it's neat that an eight-year old girl can contribute just as much to the team's point total as a 19-year-old high school graduate. It's just a great team experience."
Every child is welcome! Your child does not have to be a fast or strong swimmer to be on the team or to swim in meet events. Everyone who can swim the length of the pool is welcome to join. There will also be a swim team prep class for anyone that is interested in being on the team but is not quite ready this year.
Now is the time to join! Being a member of the Lakeridge Swim Team requires a very reasonable commitment. While the ideal is for all children to make all practices and attend all meets, we know that isn't always possible in the real world. For more information on the Swim Team contact the Swim Team Coordinator, Beth Purcell, at 206-356-9266 or b.purcell@yahoo.com
We will have Lakeridge Pool t-shirts, sweatshirts (hoodies), sweatpants and, new this year, a team jacket for sale to wear at swim meets to show support for our swim team. If you are interested in buying ‘spirit wear’, check out the order form included in the newsletter or ask at the pool office for information.
Here is the contact information for your swim team coordinators – feel free to get in touch with us with any questions….
Swim team coordinators:
Beth Purcell Events, registration, coaches 206-356-9266
Jim McDonald Communication, volunteers 206-725-7113
Pete Rossen and Ruth Bell E-Communication, t-shirts 206-722-3478
New – Volunteer Requirements
It is important that all swim team parents support the team by volunteering. New this year will be required ‘volunteer’ commitments from each family to help out with the team. This requirement can be met by helping out at concessions (several shifts are available each meet in addition to shopping, set up and clean up), timing, coordinating the pancake breakfast, swim-a-thon, etc. Volunteer opportunities will be listed on the registration forms – if you have any questions or suggestions, just ask! Each family will be required to volunteer several times throughout the swim season.…. stay tuned for details!
The Board is committed to being responsive to member comments and suggestions. To help with this effort we encourage you to send us an email (LakeridgeSwimClub@yahoo.com ) or give us a call at 206-772-1950. You can also contact any Board member directly (see phone numbers at end of newsletter).
Members are also welcome to attend Board meetings. The dates for these will be posted on the pool web site.
The web site is maintained by the General Manager at SwimLSC.org. On it you can find information on pool hours, pool calendar, swim team, pool rules and by-laws and a list of the pool board members.
